So then I realized I could edit /etc/vmware/snmp.xml (on ESXi 4.1 and 5.0) and then restart the manage agents. I started with vSphere CLI but immediately noticed that I can't use vCLI for write operations to ESXi Free. I've already started installing the OMSA VIBs on the ESXi hosts and information is starting to flow in. So I decided to give Dell OpenManage Essentials a try. So far we haven't had any major issues but I'm trying to stay proactive. I've always been struggled monitoring these hosts.

Alternatively, if you point a browser at the switch you'll gain access to the built in GUI, confusingly referred to as the Dell OpenManage Switch Administrator. That done you can either carry on with the local console, telnet into the box or use an SNMP console such as Dell's OpenManage Network Manager (not included).
If you want to properly configure and manage it, however, you need to attach a PC via the local console port and update a couple of settings, such as the IP address for telnet and/or Web-based access and to choose whether or not to use SNMP.
